Chapter 13: Teaching Every Student

Journal Questions 1 - 4.

  1. 1. The ideas in this chapter that will be most useful to me in a future teaching situation are the recommendations on seatwork and homework. Seatwork should be done shortly after a lesson so students can get supervised practice. The seatwork should be relevant, and students should be able to see the connection between the lesson and the seatwork. The work should be easy enough for students to succeed on their own. Teachers might use the seatwork time to work with small groups and allow students that are involved in seatwork to ask another student for help if needed. If homework is given, make sure students understand the assignment. In order for students to not just fill in the page, make arrangements for checking the homework, and give students a chance to make corrections for credit.

    2. The content of this chapter that has changed my view of teaching and learning are the findings on teacher expectations and student achievement. One study gave teachers “self- fulfilling prophecies,” unfounded expectations, about their students. In the K-6 school, only the achievement of five students was affected in grades one and two. The study showed that the unfounded expectations had a small effect on student IQ scores. However, the study completed concerning “the sustaining expectation effect” does affect students’ level of achievement. The sustaining expectation effect is when teachers form beliefs about students’ capabilities, and as a result, student performance remains at a certain level because teachers do not recognize improvements. Younger students are more vulnerable to this effect.

    3. The ideas in this chapter that I would use to design my classroom include the different types of student grouping. Because there are differences in students’ prior knowledge, careful grouping can help differentiate instruction. If well taught, ability grouping can be effective in math and reading. Ability grouping must provide appropriate challenge and support in order for each student to master the task. In flexible grouping, students are grouped and regrouped based on their learning needs. The use of continuous assessment is needed to make sure that students are always working within their zone of proximal development. Flexible grouping arrangements can include small groups, partners, individuals, and whole group. Flexible grouping requires high-level instruction and high expectations for all students at all levels.

    4. A question that this information has evoked is the following: How does a teacher who is using “the conceptual change teaching” approach, balance teaching for student understanding as well as cover the required curriculum?

  2. 1. The ideas in this chapter that will be most useful to me in a future teaching situation are the general ideas about teaching and learning. There were a lot of ways mentioned on how to improve your teaching and studies on certain aspects of learning such as how to teach certain subjects such as math or science more effectively, group discussion, differentiated instructions, and teacher’s expectations for their students. Applying this knowledge in my classroom will be a good start for me to have a successful learning environment.

    2. This chapter has really reinforced what I have been hearing about the teaching world. For example, I have already been introduced to the how to teach reading controversy of whole words or phonics. Being aware of these issues will help me not only in landing a teaching position, but also in having the newest resources to teach to my students.

    3. I really liked the idea presented in this chapter on learning environments. Although it is sometimes distracting, I would love to be able to take my class outdoors whenever I can find a way to connect it to my lesson. Whether we’re learning about it in science, or reading a scene in a book that takes place outdoors. Just the change in environment can really help a student to not get bored with the mundane routine of a school classroom.

    4. What is the best way to form a routine group of students? Gender, diversity, intelligence?

  3. 1. The ideas that will be most helpful to me in the future as a teacher were learning the characteristics of effective teachers. An effective teacher will be able to clarify and have organization, have warmth and enthusiasm, and have knowledge about their subject.
    2. The content in this chapter has changed my view in the way that teachers really need to be careful how they choose to teach something and really making sure that their method of teaching is the most effective for the teacher and the students. There are different ways to go about things in the classroom, so a teacher needs to take a step back and look at what is most effective.
    3. From this chapter, I would like design my classroom with whatever we are learning at the time. The classroom is a learning environment and I would always try to use the walls of the classroom for learning too. If we are learning about flowers, I would have a bulletin where students could bring in a picture and pin up and say an interesting fact about their flower.
    4. No questions evoked.

  4. 1. The ideas in this chapter that I believe will be most useful to me are constructivist approaches which is when planning is shared and negotiated among the teacher and students. I think this would be very helpful to me because I would really love to teach things to my students that I know they will enjoy plus the things that I have to teach. A student's enjoyment is very important to me. The other idea that I believe will be most useful to me is Rosenshine's six teaching functions: 1) Review and check the previous day's work. 2) Present new material 3)Provide guided practice 4) Give feedback and correctives 5) Provide independent practice and 6) Review weekly and monthly.
    2. The content in this that has opened my eyes would have to be how important it is for teachers to find a good teaching style for their students to fulfill an objective for this lesson. It is very important for a teacher to find the right way to be effective for their students. A teacher that is not effective is not a good teacher for their students. A teacher is one of the biggest role models in a child's life. And I want to be the best role model I can be.
    3. I would like to design my classroom in such a way that it encourages my students to want to learn. I would also like to design my classroom in a manner that shows my students the importance of learning. I would put up posters about learning at the beginning of the year and keep it up all year long. Most of all I would like my students to realize that learning will never end. You learn when you are a child and you learn when you are an adult. Learning is everywhere. Whether it is in school or not.
    4. The question that I have from this chapter is about Rosenshine's #1 teaching function. What do you do after you have reviewed with your student and they continue to not understand the information?

  5. 1. The idea that I think I will find most valuable in the chapter is the idea of the teacher characteristics. I feel that by knowing these, I can then focus on the ones that I consider myself weak at to ensure that my classroom is run very smoothly.
    2. The content hasn’t really changed my view of teaching, but it has clarified some things that I need to ensure I stay on top of. I thought that I could just plan a rough outline for my lesson plan, and then use my knowledge of the subject area to fill in the gaps. But now I understand that I need to plan as much of my lesson as I can, and then make any changes that I feel necessary. By doing this I could still use my subject knowledge to fill any gaps in what is planned, but I will also feel comfortable that I already know how I expect a lesson to go.
    3. I don’t think that this concept can help me in classroom design apart from making sure that everybody is able to see the board where they are sitting, are not being excluded from what is going on in the classroom.
    4. The only question really is are there any things that you can do as a teacher to use this chapter to help design a classroom?

  6. 1.The idea in this chapter that will be most useful to me is that of what effective teachers are and the characteristics they posses. I think that in order to be an effective teacher in physical education, I am going to have to be a great manager and a great motivator. I think it is especially important for me to be genuine, sincere, and fair to my students in order for me to promote the best learning and to get the most health benefit out of my class for the students.

    2. The content in this chapter has changed my view of teaching by allowing me to discover the ins and outs of teaching and everything that goes along with it. Teaching is not just a job or something someone does because they have to. It takes a well prepared person who is able to integrate all aspects of teaching to promote effective learning. There are many ways to do this, but it is not the easiest thing in the world to achieve.

    3. I think I would design my classroom around the concept of promoting learning. In physical education, there is no particular way to do this except to make a situation where all the students are engaged in the lesson and are able to see and hear what is going on. There needs to be adequate room to practice and master the skills we are doing.

    4. A question I have from this chapter is: How can I effectively integrate homework into a physical education class without spending time lecturing during class time when we could be using it for health/fitness related activity?

  7. 1. Learning about the characteristics of an effective teacher will be the most useful thing for me. From this chapter I learned multiple things, but the characteristics of an effective teacher stuck out the most to me. Effective teachers are clear and organized. They are warm towards their students and possess enthusiasm for everything they do. They also have knowledge of what they teach.
    2. The seven areas of professional learning changed my view of teaching. They revealed to me what I didn’t fully understand. Expert teachers have content knowledge and use general teaching strategies. They use curriculum that is content and age appropriate. They possess specific knowledge about the subjects they teach. They realize their learners’ characteristics and the learning setting. They have goals and purposes of teaching.
    3. I am not entirely sure how I would use this chapter to design my classroom. I would maybe have a schedule or routine posted somewhere in the classroom for each day. This would go along with the planning portion that the chapter talks about.
    4. I do not have any questions from this chapter.

  8. 1. The most useful thing about this chapter will be how a teacher's characteristics will effect the classroom. If a teacher lacks organization and enthusiasm, the classroom will reflect these attitudes.
    2. This chapter changed my view of teaching because it brought to light the importance of a teacher's attitude. A teacher is allowed to have a bad day every now and then, but should scarcely show it. It is the teacher's job to make sure they are putting the class first, and show a convincing enthusiasm to everything that is taught in a day.
    3. I would design my classroom to be an exciting area of learning. I would try to have related activities throughout the room for free time, so the students are constantly being a part of the current subjects.
    4. No questions evoked.

  9. 1. A main idea that I got from this chapter was the effects that the teachers characteristics have on the classroom. This just does not effect their teaching style, but also how the students learn. If a teacher is positive, students will learn better. I negative teacher will most likely have lower grades from their students.

    2. This was important cause it remind me that I need to have a positive attitude in the classroom. Students feed off my attitude. If I am in a bad mood and I show it the students are going to reflect that and hinder their learning.

    3. I will have "happy" colors in my classroom. There will be positive posters that will give students motivation. There will also be some funny posters, or comic strips to make the students laugh.

    4. How man I mask my emotions when I am not in a particularly good mood?

  10. 1. While reading this chapter, my view of learning and teaching was changed by learning about the idea of organization and clarity. I obviously believed that it is important to be prepared before reading this chapter, but this chapter really reinforced my views of the importance of teaching with a plan. Students need to know what is expected and how to do assignments. I also was impacted by Rosenshine’s 6 functions of Teaching
    2. I think that in the classroom, I must have everything ready and laid out for the students. A little planning goes a long way and should keep the student’s prepared for what is to come. I also think it will be important for me to have clear and direct instructions for students.
    3. I think that a structured classroom routine will be excellent to have in the classroom. Perhaps it could be posted somewhere, but as soon as students embody the routine it will be easier to manage the classroom and keep them prepared.
    4. How do the 7 areas of professional knowledge increase a teacher’s effectiveness? Can a teacher still be effective if he or she does not excel in all 7 areas?
