  1. 1. The ideas in this chapter that will be most useful to me in a future teaching situation include the six-step problem solving strategy to solve a conflict between the teacher and student: 1) Define the problem: discuss what each person wants and use active listening to assist students in discovering the real problem. 2) Generate many possible solutions: brainstorm solutions. 3) Evaluate each solution: the student or the teacher can veto any idea; keep brainstorming until a solution is found. 4) Make a decision: mutually agree on one solution. 5) Determine how to implement the solution: what is needed, who is responsible for each task, and what is the timetable? 6) Evaluate the success of the solution: after trying the solution for a period of time, determine if it is working or if changes need to be made.

    2. The content of this chapter that has changed my view of teaching and learning is the discussion on “time management.” Teachers want as much time as possible for student learning – allocated time. Making more time for learning does not necessarily lead to student achievement. Students need to be actively involved in the learning task in order to learn and remember – engaged time/time on task. However, engaged time does not necessarily lead to student achievement. The ultimate goal is for students to be working with a high rate of learning success – academic learning time. Research shows that the 1000+ hours of time mandated for school in most states can become only about 333 hours of quality academic time for a typical student. Teachers need the kind of classroom management that will increase academic learning time by keeping students actively engaged in worthwhile, appropriate learning activities.

    3. Using the ideas in this chapter, I would design my classroom to include the suggestions for the six basic rules for the secondary classroom which include: 1) Bring all requested supplies to class. 2) Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. 3) Respect and be polite to all people. 4) Listen and remain seated while someone else is speaking. 5) Respect others’ property. 6) Obey all school rules.

    4. A question that this information has evoked is: Should teachers be allowed to use Face Book to communicate with parents?

  2. 1. I think classroom management is one of the scariest issues in teaching. Most of the content of this chapter will therefore help me greatly in a future teaching situation. From this chapter, I learned some things that will help me establish a successful learning environment from day one. The first day, I need to establish a consistent routine and expectations for my students and emphasize their responsibility to follow these. A sense of respect needs to also be established between the students and their peers, and the students and me, which will eliminate many potential problems, as well as decrease the risk for bullying and students being uncomfortable in my class.

    2. This chapter gives me hope for managing my classroom. Management has always been a fear of mine, so I can now feel a little more confident in that area. Being able to apply these suggestions in future experience such as student teaching and observing, I can get a hold on what it is like to manage a classroom. Paying attention to these types of things while I am observing will also benefit me greatly, now that I know what I am looking for.

    3. Based on the ideas in this chapter, organization will be key in my classroom. Just having a space that is easy on the eyes will help students to feel relaxed and more easygoing which will eliminate problems of stress based arguments. Also, I think it is a good idea to place reminders of the rules and procedures throughout the classroom where they are easily readable, especially things like specials. This gives the students easy reference to the schedule in case they forget and they can prepare for what they have next without always having to ask me. I can also refer them to these charts when they misbehave or fail to meet an expectation that we have clearly defined.

    4. What are some ways to address issues like bullying and gossiping without drawing attention to or embarrassing the victim?

  3. 1. The idea in this chapter that will be most useful to me is teaching my students the correct way to manage themselves. I read in this chapter that when teachers focus more on students compliance it prevents their students from actually understanding and obtaining what they learn. If we do not teach our students that their is more to learning than just following rules and going step by step then we are hurting them more than making them into the learners they need to be.
    2. This chapter has opened my eyes to how easy it can be to not have good classroom management. But it has also given me hope, because this chapter teaches you steps to take to have good classroom management with your class. It gives ideas on how to treat your students when they misbehave, how to get your students to enjoy their lessons more, and it gives you ideas on how to connect more with your students.
3.After reading this chapter I will design my classroom in a very organized manner. I will have procedures on the walls so my students will know what to do and when to do it. I will make sure all my lesson plans are in a very organized manner so I can always stay on top of things with my students. I will design my classroom in a way that it will be easy for my students to find all the materials that they need for whatever lesson they might have.
    4. The question that I have is what steps should you take when you come upon a student that just refuses to follow your rules continually?

  4. 1. The idea most useful for me in the chapter is the general topic of classroom management. Classroom management is an aspect of school that I have experienced some anxiety over. The tips and strategies that have been provided throughout this chapter should greatly impact me as a teacher in the future. In addition, the idea of creating a positive learning environment should be very valuable to me.
    2. I suppose the chapter has changed my view of the need for organization in teaching. Obviously, it is important to be prepared and have all paperwork in order, however this chapter opened up my eyes to understanding the need to have time organized. I learned that there essentially needs to be time organized and set aside for learning and time set aside for assessment. It is important that these times are set aside appropriately.
    3. I think that in organizing my classroom, I will be certain to remember that classrooms are dynamic environments. I will also remember that it is important to consider every aspect of the environment that will impact the classroom. I must remember that students will behave different ways at different times of the day. In addition, students may also be impacted differently by the different items of setup of the classroom.
    4. How does Kounin’s theory really come into play in the classroom?

  5. 1. The idea that was the clearest to me in this chapter was obviously, classroom management. This has many sub topics that fall underneath it. This is not just re arranging people in their seats, or how the class room is going to look, but how you teach and being prepared. Organization is a one of the biggest part when it comes to classroom management.

    2. It never really occurred to me exactly how much organization goes into class room management. As a teacher, I need to be even more prepare for the up coming class than the students. Being one step a head of the classroom and students is going to make the teaching experience for both my students and I.

    3. Having organization throughout the whole classroom is a good way to have excellent classroom management. In my field experience, the teacher that I observed did this very well. She had all her students in the particular class period turn in their homework from the night before in their particular tray. She also had all her sheets, handouts, power points, and notes ready before class even started. This was good for my experience to see how good classroom management is accomplished.

    4. I have seen and been part of verbal punishment. My question is, does "calling" a student out in the classroom really make them stop long term? Or is it better to let them go and pull them aside?

  6. 1. Many of the ideas in this chapter will be useful to me in the future. This chapter has helped me to learn many of things that are required to establish a properly managed classroom. Some of the important ideas were establishing rules on day one and also having consequences predetermined.
    2. This has changed my view of the teaching because it is the teacher's responsibility to establish the proper learning environment. It is through what the teacher has done that the students will follow in a proper behavior. Therefore, teachers are required to have a lot of responsibility and organization.
    3. Using the ideas in this chapter I would design my classroom in a way to minimize inappropriate behavior. First, I would have the rules posted somewhere in the classroom, to be used as a reminder, and as a reference if one is broken. I would also use "proximity" later in the school year. If there are students that are more prone to exhibit inappropriate behavior, then they should be seated in a place in the classroom that can be easily monitored to keep them from displaying that same behavior.
    4. No questions were evoked.

  7. 1. The ideas in this chapter that will be most helpful to me in the future was learning about classroom management. Having good classroom management is key for learning to take place in the classroom. This chapter emphasized to have a clear set of rules and procedures that way students can know what to expect. This chapter was also helpful because it dealt with how to have good behavior in the classroom and steps to prevent bad behavior from happening in the first place.
    2. This chapter has changed my view in the way how much organization and being prepared really influences how things go in the classroom. A teacher cannot walk in the classroom last minute. A teacher has to be prepared and organized for the students; otherwise, it could be mass choas. Also, teachers need to have things for students because busy students behave better then non-busy students.
    3. I would design my classroom from this chapter by placing students in groups with their desks together (with students that can sit together and work well together). I would also have A bulletin with our daily activities in order, that way students know when and what will happen during the day. Then, I would make sure the classroom rules would be posted that way students could be reminded when they looked at it and students would be aware of what the rules are. On my desk or on a side table, I would have places where students could turn in the homework and also a place to pick up homework to do. Overall, I would try to organize my classroom the best that I could.
    4. A question that might be evoked is: What do you do when you have a continual disruptive student and you call a meeting with the parents, but they do not seem to care at all about their child's misbehavior?

  8. 1. All the things in this chapter will be helpful in the future, but specifically I learned a lot from the stuff about classroom management. The need for organization is important. Classrooms are dynamic environments, and we must make them into positive learning environments.

    2. This chapter has completely changed what I thought about classroom management. I learned that it is so much more than just keeping your students under control. It's remaining organized, building relationships, and making a positive learning environment.

3.I would design my classroom in a way that would discourage misbehavior. I don't want the student desks too close together, but I also want them close enough to do group work.

    4. I don't have any questions for this chapter.

  9. 1. The idea in this chapter that will be most valuable to me is definitely classroom management. Dealing with students and keeping them on task is very important to having a successful learning environment. Managing the classroom isn’t just things like arranging where students sit, and keeping them quiet, but it is about creating an environment where all the students in this class feel most comfortable to be able to do the work that is required of them.
    2. This chapter has changed my view of what I have to do as a teacher to manage my class. I can’t just set the students a task and expect them to go ahead and do it without some more guidance from me as the teacher. This has shown me that I need to be proactive in my classroom and just stay on top of things to encourage students to keep on task.
    3. I would design my classroom so that I am able to move freely around between all of the students so that I am able to offer help to any student that needs it. I would also try and have some space away from other students or just enough space so that if an activity required it, I could spread the desks out to make the groups more cut off from each other, or I could completely clear the desks away so that I can have all of the students performing an activity in the classroom.
    4. Are there any classroom management techniques that are effective to use with large groups of PE students in a gym setting and then the same question for use of a large group of students doing activities within a classroom?
