Chapter 3: The Self, Social, and Moral Development

Respond to the following questions:

1.  What ideas in the chapter will be most useful or valuable to you in a future teaching situation?
2.  How has the content of this chapter changed your view of teaching and learning?
3.  How might you design your classroom using the ideas in this chapter?
4.  Questions that this information has evoked.
5.  Many researchers have suggested that self-esteem is determined by how successful we are in accomplishing tasks or reaching goals we value.  As a middle or high school teacher, how might you use this information to maximize learning in subjects traditionally considered boring?

  1. 1.The ideas in chapter three that I think will be most useful to me in a future teaching situation would be crowds, cliques, and peer cultures. Every child wants to be liked and every child wants to fit in. I know that when I was a student in elementary and middle school I sometimes got made fun of for many things. So I would try my best to fit in with the cool group, the smart group, and the athletic group. I know I was not the first student to feel pressured to fit in the "cool" groups, and I know that I will not be the last student to want to fit in. I am interested in these ideas because I want to be better prepared to handle all the situations my students might go through. I want to let them know that they are special and fearfully and wonderfully made by God.
    2.The content of this chapter has showed me that every student will eventually go through some kind of problem. It is our jobs as teachers to help our students get through the problems they are having the best we can.
    3.The two things I can think of that I would use to design my room would be to first put up pictures of other kids getting along and being friends. The second thing I would do is put up posters of scriptures that show the students of how special they are.
    4.The two questions that came to my mind after I read this chaper was what causes kids to act this way and migrate to certain groups? What makes a child feel like they are never good enough?
    5.As a elementary teacher I would try to find ways to make the class more appealing. For example: have games for the class, and put students into groups or teams so that they have to depend on each other in order to win. Another thing that I would do would be to get the students to interact and say what they think. Because if a kid can get the courage to speak up there confidence will gradually build, also speaking in class causes the students to get involved and makes learning more fun.

  2. 1. This chapter talked about how the student’s background and type of parenting can affect children’s learning. This will help me to better understand my student’s struggles in school and not always just blame it on them and what they are not doing. It is not an excuse for them to slack off, but understanding their background can help me to encourage them in the right way and help them to succeed. Also, understanding that just because children may develop younger physically, that doesn’t mean that they are developed mentally at the same stage.

    2. The content of this chapter has changed my view of learning on the children’s part because even though I was them at one time, I don’t remember it that well, and I couldn’t explain what I was feeling and going through. Children, especially at an older elementary/junior high age are dealing with some tough issues in themselves and trying to decide who they want to be, but also with each other and family. They have a lot to deal with, along with their school work. This helps me to have a little more compassion and patience with them when they test me.

    3. Based on the ideas in this chapter, I think incorporating a lot of group activities that are academic, and social/just-for-fun will help to bring my students together so they have peers they feel comfortable around and get to know different types of people from different backgrounds and experiences, and find peers they can relate to.

    4. This chapter makes me wonder to what extent a good teacher can have on the success of lower achieving students or students with a difficult background and home life. Also, what is the limit on the relationship between you and a student? If elementary level, how involved can you get in their life without going too far and intruding?

    5. I think you could use this research to develop goals that they desire to achieve and are capable of achieving to give them a higher confidence in that area, which in turn will help them to like the subject more because they are good at it. Get the students excited about the topic and assign them something they can achieve and that is interesting, but related to the lesson.

  3. 1. The ideas in this chapter will be most useful or valuable in how teachers need to be aware of how children are developing physically and socially. Especially during the adolescent years, kids are very impressionable and are going through puberty among other things in life. Teachers need to know that self-esteem has a big part to play in how students do academically and shouls learn to be an encourager and should motivate students in their work to be successful.
    2. The content in this chapter has changed my view on how student's background affects the way that they are at school and influences them. So it is something to take into account as a teacher to know the background of your students.
    3. How I would design my classroom with the ideas from this chapter is to look at the age group that I am teaching and try to correspond my classroom so that they feel like they belong there and fit in and so students will know that is their safe classroom where they feel comfortable learning.
    4. Questions evoked in this chapter might be how teachers have dealt with a mixed classroom of ethnicities or different backgrounds and how they made the classroom work.
    5. I would try to use this new research in my classroom with the boring subjects by making my students feel like their good at the subject. I would try to get my students to have confidence in the area and use fun activities and then I feel like my students would have better self-confidence knowing that they could do it and ultimately become successful.

  4. 1. The ideas in the chapter that will be most valuable for me are the ideas of children acquiring a sense of self and the ideas of social development. For me, this information was very helpful because it gives insight as to how to help students identify who they are and who they want to be, and also how to help them with what situations they are currently dealing with with their friends, family, teachers, etc. To me, it is very important that the kids know who they are and what they stand for. They are who they are and are proud to be that. I want to help them in any way with that and any problems they have socially as well.
    2. I think the content of the chapter has changed my views on teaching and learning by emphasizing that the children have needs that need to be met socially and personally. It is up to me to help them with that. As a teacher, we bear a large weight helping kids figure out who they are and helping them with their social lives. It shows that there is a side to teaching that is not just teaching. There is an emotional side that the kids need help with to continue living life to their full potential.
    3. I think that I would design my classroom with symbolism of friendships and different aspects of a child's social life and also symbolism of self and self esteem and getting to know who you are as a person. I would design my classroom using a team approach so everyone, at least within the class is socially involved.
    4. One important question I have is: how do you approach helping a child that is struggling finding out who they are?
    5. I would use the boring subjects as opportunities to do fun activities in the classroom. I would use them and play games, create projects, and use various forms of media to make them more desirable. By using these techniques along with course work that corresponds to it, hopefully the kids can have fun and be more successful, thus increasing their self-esteem.

  5. 1. One of the biggest eye-openers to me was the fact that in high school, students are trying to find themselves. They are trying to understand their place in this world, also in the school. I need to make sure that I do not say or do anything that may put the idea of doubt in a students mind. I need to always lift them up and help them as much as I can.

    2. Reading this chapter gave me ideas on how I would go about helping out students in sticky situations. As a teacher there are things I am allowed to do, and things I am not allowed to do. I have to know that line, and make sure I can help any student as much as possible, WITHOUT crossing over that line.

    3. I would have images of friendship and posters that are uplifting. I want my students to feel safe and happy in my class room. I would also incorporate teams throughout different projects. This will help students to understand the idea of cooperation, and also accepting ideas of others.

    4. Is there a way I can help a student in a tight situation without getting to attached to that particular situation?

    5. I would help students accomplish their goals as much as possible. I am not just going to give out easy A's, but I will always encourage my students and never make them feel bad about themselves. I will treat every student equal therefore they all feel like they belong. This will in return give them a comfort in my class room which will make them more prone to learning and keeping information that is given.

  6. 1. This chapter was important because it covered many important aspects of a person's self-identity. As a teacher, we will be responsible for people of many different walks of life. We have to have a understanding and acceptance of people, and be sensitive to who they are and understand there may be reasons for their individuality that we do not understand or can't change.
    2. This chapter gave me a realization of the different things that school aged kids go through. It taught me that I will need to be sensitive to different situations.
    3. I would put my students in various groups of people so they can learn to be more accepting of others and not just like those who are similar to them.
    4. No questions were evoked during my reading.
    5. Use innovative ways to make the material come alive. Have the students do projects that are based on problem solving and supporting their own thoughts and opinions. When they have their own ideas put into a project they will value it more. Due to their higher value of the subject their self-esteem will be increased when they are doing their work.

  7. 1. An idea in this chapter that will be most useful or valuable to me in a future teaching situation is knowing first and foremost that students value a caring teacher. A teacher is caring when he or she shows support for academic learning and a concern for personal problems. Current issues that are prevalent problems include understanding peer cultures and how aggression can develop. Knowing how divorce and family issues affect a student’s performance at school and recognizing the signs of child abuse are vital.

    2. The content of this chapter has changed my view of teaching and learning by the fact that a lot of students struggle with their identity. In particular, teachers need to be able to reach out to help students struggling with sexual identity. As a future high school math teacher, it is a possibility that a student will come directly to me for assistance in this matter. The following five-point plan suggested in this chapter will be helpful: 1. Listen to the student’s concerns. 2. Affirm that he or she is not alone in dealing with this issue. 3. Refer the student to a trained counselor in this area. 4. Address any harassment issues. 5. Follow-up to be sure the situation has improved.

    3. Using the ideas in this chapter, I would design my classroom around three basic expectations for students to follow: Be respectful, be responsible, and be caring citizens. I would also ask students to write one academic goal and one personal goal each quarter with specific strategies of how they will accomplish each goal.

    4. A question that this information has evoked: Are there character development programs available for schools based on specific cultures and racial groups?

    5. In regards to the relationship between student self-esteem and success, educators need to reflect on the following statement from the chapter: “Teachers’ feedback, grading practices, evaluations, and communication of caring for students can make a difference in how students feel about their abilities in particular subjects.” As a future high school math teacher, one of my main goals is to help students to not be afraid of math; and therefore, I believe that confidence and achievement are related. I also plan on making the math content relatable to students’ interests through real-world applications. It is apparent that every part of this proposed curriculum and how I will relate to students will play a part in achieving my goal of a positive student attitude toward mathematics.

  8. 1. Within an Art classroom, I believe that it is an excellent place for the instructor to be a powerful model and encourager for students. Often times my class will be free to work on projects and as long as work gets done converse as they work. Examples are one of the best ways that students will develop good morals. This chapter reinforces my desire to teach in that I will be able to shine godly morals through the way I interact and talk with my students. Not only will I be able to morally teach students, I will be able to develop each student’s self-esteem by giving the students affirmation and positive feedback on assignments as well as extracurricular achievements.
    2. Once again, the chapter has reinforced my view to affirm and provide moral living for students.
    In addition, I was encouraged by the differing parenting styles. As an instructor I think my biggest fear is being an instructor that the students don’t like or see as caring for them. With the parenting styles, I now see that just because I have expectations and rules does not mean the students will view me as a bad teacher who doesn’t care about his students. I plan on having rules and gaining the respect of my students by enforcing these rules, but to also have the ability to listen and engage my students.
    3. As an art instructor I plan on setting up the classroom that encourages students to work while giving them the ability to process and check out of other classes for a time. I think that in these moments of interaction with my students they will be able to see my heart and know that I genuinely care about them. I will also encourage student interaction that will build up each student’s own strengths in the class.
    4. The chapter produced the question: How much of close is it appropriate for me as instructor to get to students problems, joys, desires, and lives in general.
    5. Within subjects that are considered boring, I would make certain to provide students with applicability of each new concept that is being taught. Within the school setting I struggled with checking out of assignments that I saw as worthless or pointless to my future. If the students see the value of the assignments rather than simply being taught a subject they view are worthless they will attach themselves more readily to it.
    Another option is to tie other subjects in the boring subject. As an art instructor, I can readily suggest including art in a math project of some kind. This will get students more interested as well as produce a new way for the students to look at things.

  9. 1. The ideas in this chapter that will be most beneficial to me as a future teacher have to do with dealing with students who are searching for their identity. Students in my classroom will all be developing as people, and it’s important to help them. Also, because of the differences in development, there may be bullying. As a teacher, I will need to keep an eye out for kids who are not being treated well by their classmates. I’ll have to deal with issues like that; and, I will try to accommodate students who don’t feel comfortable working with other students because maybe they are physically awkward due to rapid development or perhaps they are behind.
    2. The content of this chapter has enlightened me on the facts surrounding students’ self-concepts and their self-esteem. A lot of things affect a student. Things close to them like their family shape them, their religious settings, and the classroom. They are also influenced by media, the school, and their community. Also, external things influence them like national customs, cultural values, social conditions, and economic patterns.
    3. From this chapter, I have an idea for my classroom that will help kids work together and not cause division. I want to set up games or things that students have to do together. Hopefully this will help friendships to form, and students can work together and learn to appreciate each other’ differences.
    4. I do not have many questions, but do teachers really have to deal with developmental things like puberty? Would an elementary teacher have to ever address that?
    5. To make boring subjects a success among students’ interest, I would probably add fun into the mix. Maybe play a game that focuses on the material, but the winners receive extra credit on a test. Or, students could just be competitive (most middle school or high school students are very competitive) and that would drive them to learn the subject without even really knowing. A video or movie would interest them more than just lecturing also.

    1. I just wanted to respond to the answer for number 4. I do believe that as an elementary major, I do believe that I will have to deal some with puberty. I am hoping to teach later grades, so I do see that children will start off puberty around those grades. I also know that children start puberty at different times and some could start really early.

  10. 1. The ideas in this chapter that I think will be most useful to me the idea of how students will do some radical things to fit in with ‘cliques’ in their school, they may change their looks, how they behave, and how they view success in school. Some students think that it’s ‘cool’ to be a mediocre student, when they have to potential to be a straight A student. Also the student’s background can have an influence on their achievement and attitude towards school. But I think some students from less privileged backgrounds use this as an excuse to not do school work when they have lots of potential to be a very good student.
    2. The content in this chapter has shown me that students go through some confusing times and have a lot of difficult decisions to make, and as educators, it is our responsibility to provide them with support and help them through tough times and provide them with advice that they can use both in the classroom and in their life outside of school.
    3. Using the information that I have learned in this chapter has made me think that when designing a seating chart for a class I would try to mix up any social groups that the students had formed outside of the classroom in an effort to get everybody to integrate so that nobody in the classroom would be isolated and feel left out of the activities that were taking place in the classroom.
    4. One question that this chapter has made me think about is why when students are outside of the classroom they stick in their groups and do not allow others into their group, but when students are in the classroom they actually socialize with people from many different groups without any objection and they do not reject the people who they would not normally socialize with.
    5. Using this information about self-esteem and how big of an impact it plays in the life of middle and high school students. I have noticed that all students need to have positive reinforcement when they are in the process of learning and understanding what they are being taught. Obviously, they cannot be told that they are always correct, because that will hurt their learning rather than help them. Personally I think that one of the best ways to instruct and correct a student if they do not understand something, or are wrong about something is to use constructive criticism. This is because it tells the student when they are wrong, but it will also allow you as the teacher to take the good parts that they used in their answer and redirect their train of thought, or make slight adjustments to the way that they were thinking so that they can reach the correct answer on their own, rather than just telling them the right answer and not explaining how to get it. Also to make the learning for a student more fun and interesting I would have activities where the students get to interact with others around them, be competitive in situations that would allow them to be and to introduce activities that get them to think outside the box in how they can approach the information in front of them and how they can interpret it so that they best understand it themselves.

  11. 1. I think one of the most important parts of this chapter is about morality and the levels that there are based on it. Knowing that children have different levels of it will help me in cases where a child does something that doesn't make sense why they would. Also, knowing signs of things like abuse will help in the classroom as I would need to know how to see if a child needs help.

    2. I think that knowing the different levels for morality of people will help me understand how a child acts and reacts to different situation and will help me be a fair teacher. Also, knowing ways to improve a child's self-esteem will help out.

    3. Having a clear set of rules that the students will know what they are, are clearly seen, and different consequences for the ruels will help out. Positive consequences will help raise self-esteem in children which may also help raise their self concept.

    4. I don't really have any questions from this chapter that haven't already been addressed.

    5. One way to help with it is to have the students set goals for the classes, such as an "I will try my hardest to make this grade in the class." Another is to break up projects or subjects into smaller tasks, such as starting an essay project off with the students picking a subject, writing an outline, and using graphic organizers to help organize thoughts.

The ideas from chapter three that will be most useful to me in a future teaching would be the fact that sometimes outside factors have a lot to do with the development of morals in young people. Sometimes it is not a mistake if your teaching but something they have grown up to know or have even created in their head. Sometimes it is not as easy as teaching new social concepts but restructuring concepts.Influences of young people are often their parents and the type parenting style they use, their peers, and the changes they are going through. Also, that it is important to show students that I care by accepting their differences and creating an environment where differences are not a bad thing.
    2. The content of this chapter changed my view of teaching and learning by showing me stages of development are impact the way students may act in class. If some students are slower in developing than others you will have a diverse classroom of students. Some will be more mature and other will need more help when it comes to tasks including maturity.
    3. Using the ideas in the chapter I might design my classroom to fit multiple stages of development. I might have to make some decisions and other I might have the class make.

    What is an effective way to incorporate a wide variety of stages of development into the classroom?
    5. To increase self-esteem in the classroom for the subject that are considered boring I will guide my students through finding something they find interesting about the topic. From there they will be able to write goals for themselves. Since they have found an interest in the topic they will be more likely to be successful. Then once they achieve these goals their confidence and self-esteem for the subject will increase.
